Chapter 2127: Going with the flow
Chapter 2127: Going with the flow
Yan Ruyu and Huo Changhe exchanged a glance.
"This will save me from wandering around aimlessly," Yan Ruyu thought to herself.
Wu Kun's initiative in inviting him saved a lot of trouble.
Huo Changhe's attention was entirely focused on the defense along the way. His gaze seemed to casually sweep over the surroundings, but in reality, he memorized every figure and every fence.
"The defense is indeed loose," Huo Changhe thought to himself.
Perhaps because the place was too secluded, they felt that no one could find it.
He glanced at Wu Kun's back. The man walked with his knees slightly turned inward, his steps were wider than normal, and his trousers swayed with his movements, clearly showing the muscle lines on the outside of his calves—the marks left by years of horseback riding. Coupled with his obvious bowlegs, this further confirmed the point.
After walking for about half an incense stick's time, several houses with green tiles appeared in the distance, which should be the direction of the front hall.
Just then, a subordinate dressed in a gray cloth shirt came running over, staggering and looking anxious. He called out from afar, "Manager, the carriage..."
He had only said two words when Wu Kun suddenly stopped, his eyelids darkened, and he glared at him.
His gaze wasn't exactly fierce, but it carried an undeniable air of authority.
The subordinate in the gray shirt abruptly stopped speaking, instinctively shrinking his neck and taking two steps back, no longer daring to utter a sound.
Yan Ruyu raised an eyebrow, silently memorizing the scene.
Wu Kun seemed oblivious to the earlier incident, turning around with a polite smile on his face: "Please excuse my poor manners, my men were rude. We've arrived at the front hall, please come in."
There were four square tables in the room, the tabletops of which were not very clean and had several deep scratches.
Wu Kun gestured for them to sit at a table further inside, then called out towards the door, "Serve tea."
Soon, a young girl came in carrying a tray with three rough porcelain teacups on it, the aroma of tea rich and strong.
As soon as Yan Ruyu's fingertips touched the cup, the space immediately issued a warning, and she instantly knew something was wrong with the tea.
It's either poison or it's been adulterated with a large amount of sleeping potion.
She sneered inwardly. She and Huo Changhe had taken elixirs that made them immune to all poisons in their early years, so this trick was no match for them at all.
Yan Ruyu picked up the teacup, her fingertips tracing the rim, and took a sip as if it were nothing. The warm tea slid down her throat and she swallowed it without lingering.
Wu Kun, who was sitting opposite her, had been watching her movements. When he saw her drink it calmly, the muscles at the corner of his eye twitched slightly, his tense shoulders relaxed a little, and even his tone of voice softened: "You two don't look like you're from around here. Where did you come from? You've come all the way to this remote place. Is there something you need?"
Huo Changhe put down his teacup, the bottom of which lightly touched the table, making a crisp sound.
He looked up at Wu Kun, his gaze calm and unwavering. Instead of answering directly, he asked, "This place looks remote. We've passed by it several times before without noticing. I wonder whose property it is? I've never heard of such a large horse farm nearby before."
Wu Kun's eyes flickered for a moment. He picked up his teacup, took a sip, and then slowly said, "It's just a small business run by country folk, nothing to brag about. You two look like distinguished guests from the city, so why are you suddenly interested in our horse farm?"
"Having nothing to do, I came out to enjoy the scenery and happened to see this horse farm, so I thought I'd come in and see if there were any good horses." Huo Changhe's tone was flat, making it impossible to tell whether he was telling the truth or not.
Just then, Yan Ruyu suddenly stood up, a hint of apology on her face, and smiled at Wu Kun: "Manager Wu, I'm sorry, after having some tea I need to use the restroom. Do you know where the outhouse is? Could you please give me directions?"
Upon hearing this, Wu Kun waved his hand dismissively and gestured with his chin to one of his subordinates standing against the wall: "Take this distinguished guest there."
Upon hearing this, the subordinate quickly responded with "Yes," and turned to Yan Ruyu, gesturing for her to follow him: "Come with me."
Yan Ruyu followed him out of the front hall and onto a path lined with several old locust trees. Some of the leaves had fallen, and they made a soft "rustling" sound underfoot.
The path was paved with gravel and was uneven. The subordinate walked in a hurry, his steps hurried forward.
"It's just ahead." He pointed to a simple thatched hut not far away and was about to turn back.
Taking advantage of the moment he turned around, Yan Ruyu raised her hand and gently tapped the back of his neck.
The subordinate didn't utter a sound; his body went limp, and he silently collapsed into the nearby bushes. The withered grass covered most of his body, making him almost unnoticeable unless you looked closely.
Yan Ruyu looked around; there was no one else there.
She took out a rope and a small piece of burlap from her spatial storage, first binding the subordinate's hands and feet tightly, then giving him some sleeping potion, and finally stuffing the burlap into his mouth to ensure that he wouldn't be able to make a sound even if he woke up.
After doing all this, she dragged the person behind the flower wall next to her. The flower wall was covered with morning glory vines, and the dense branches and leaves perfectly concealed the person.
Having dealt with everything, Yan Ruyu dusted off her hands, turned around, and quickly walked back.
She remembered that the gray-shirted subordinate who had brought the message earlier had come this way.
She walked back the way she came towards the moon gate, and sure enough, as soon as she turned a corner, she saw the gray-shirted subordinate standing at the moon gate.
Yan Ruyu walked straight over without stopping and stopped in front of him.
The subordinate was startled, his eyes instantly turning panicked: "Y-how did you get here?"
"I have something to ask you," Yan Ruyu said calmly. "You were just talking to Steward Wu about the carriage. What happened to the carriage?"
The man in the gray shirt's expression changed, his eyes flickered, and he subconsciously took a step back: "Why are you asking this? This has nothing to do with you."
"How can it be unrelated?" Yan Ruyu raised an eyebrow, took out a token from her sleeve, and waved it in front of him.
"Manager Wu was worried about too many people and attracting attention, so he specifically sent me to ask. This carriage was prepared for us, where is it now? Take me there."
The subordinate in the gray shirt stared at the token, hesitating for a moment. He had been in this place for quite a while and had never seen any token before.
However, judging from Yan Ruyu's attire, she was indeed a distinguished guest personally welcomed by Steward Wu, and Steward Wu had indeed been very polite to them in the hall just now.
He hesitated, a question forming in his mind, and said, "But...but Manager Wu didn't mention this to me..."
"You think you can guess what the manager is thinking?" Yan Ruyu's tone turned serious, and her eyes sharpened. "There were too many people in the hall just now, so he couldn't say it outright and specifically asked me to talk to you privately. If you delay important matters, can you bear the consequences when the manager holds you accountable?"
These words struck a nerve with the subordinate in the gray shirt.
He was already afraid of Wu Kun, and after being intimidated by Yan Ruyu, he was at a loss, and the anxiety on his face turned into fear.
He glanced at the token in Yan Ruyu's hand, then thought about how Wu Kun had interrupted him earlier, and the more he thought about it, the more he felt that this might be true.
“I’ll take you there.” He quickly waved his hand. “Come with me, the carriage is just outside the back door.”
After saying that, he turned and went through the moon gate, walking along a narrower path.
Yan Ruyu followed closely behind, her eyes warily scanning her surroundings.
