Chapter 9: Conspiracy Unveiled and Life-or-Death Crisis
Wanru gritted her teeth and mustered her courage to walk towards the light. Her heart pounded like a drum in her chest, each step feeling like it took all her strength. At this moment, she was filled with worry for Huanmo's safety, and all sorts of terrible thoughts flashed through her mind.
"Please, please don't let anything happen to Young Master Huanmo. What should I do if something happens to him?" Wanru thought anxiously to herself, tears welling up in her eyes, but she held them back. She knew this was not the time to cry; she had to find Huanmo as soon as possible.
As she drew closer to the light, the sounds of fighting grew clearer. The crisp clash of metal, mixed with angry shouts and muffled groans, made Wanru's heart leap into her throat.
Finally, Wanru reached the edge of the light. She hid behind a pillar and cautiously peeked out to watch the fierce fight taking place.
Huanmo was being attacked by several men in black. He had several wounds on his body, and blood stained his clothes. But his eyes remained firm and fierce. He kept swinging his sword, each strike carrying great force, forcing the approaching men in black back.
The men in black were clearly well-trained; they worked in perfect harmony, constantly changing the angles and methods of their attacks in an attempt to break through Huanmo's defenses.
Beside him stood a middle-aged man in fine clothes with a gloomy face, coldly watching the fight, a sneer occasionally creeping onto his lips, as if everything was under his control.
When Wanru saw Huanmo injured, she was so distressed that she almost cried out. She covered her mouth to keep quiet so as not to attract the attention of those people and cause Huanmo more trouble.
"Who are these people? Why are they so vicious in dealing with Young Master Huanmo?" Wanru thought angrily to herself. Her gaze swept over the men in black, trying to find some clues, but she found nothing.
During the fight, Huanmo sensed someone nearby. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of the pillar where Wanru was hiding, and his heart skipped a beat. He hadn't expected Wanru to find this place. His biggest worry right now was Wanru's safety; if these people discovered her, the consequences would be unimaginable.
"Wanru, run! It's dangerous here!" Huanmo shouted as she struggled to fend off the attacks from the men in black.
Wanru hesitated upon hearing Huanmo's cries. How could she stand by and watch Huanmo in such a dangerous situation while she left alone? However, she also knew that if she stayed, she might truly become a burden to Huanmo.
Just as Wanru was struggling internally, the men in black seemed to have noticed Huanmo's distraction, and they took the opportunity to launch an even more intense attack.
Huanmo was momentarily caught off guard when a man in black seized the opportunity and thrust his dagger fiercely into Huanmo's chest.
"No!" Wanru couldn't help but exclaim. She rushed out from behind the pillar and ran towards Huanmo.
Hearing Wanru's exclamation, Huanmo's heart tightened. He mustered all his strength and dodged to the side, barely avoiding the fatal blow. But the dagger still sliced a long gash in his arm, and blood gushed out.
Wanru rushed to Huanmo's side, reaching out to support him, her eyes filled with fear and heartache.
"Young Master Huanmo, how are you?" Wanru asked in a trembling voice.
Huanmo looked at Wanru, feeling both touched and anxious. He knew Wanru had rushed out out of concern for him, but her appearance now undoubtedly made the situation more dangerous.
"Wanru, you shouldn't have come. Now we're all in danger," Huanmo said, but his hand still instinctively grasped Wanru's hand, as if that could offer them some comfort.
When the men in black saw Wanru appear, they were first taken aback, and then a sinister smile appeared on their faces.
"Haha, I didn't expect this kid to have a little lover hidden here. This will save us trouble. Let's take care of them together!" one of the men in black said viciously.
As they spoke, they surrounded Huanmo and Wanru, their weapons gleaming coldly in the firelight, sending chills down one's spine.
Huanmo shielded Wanru behind him, gripping his sword tightly. Despite the sharp pain from the wound on his arm, he endured it, preparing for a final, desperate fight against the men in black.
Wanru hid behind Huanmo, her body trembling slightly, but her eyes held a resolute determination. She knew there was no turning back now; she had to face this life-or-death crisis with Huanmo.
Just as the man in black was about to launch his attack, suddenly, a commotion of footsteps and shouts came from outside.
"Help! Someone is trying to assassinate the young master!"
"Protect the young master!"
It turned out that Huanmo's men had heard the fighting and rushed over.
Upon hearing the commotion, the men in black's expressions changed. They knew that if they continued to fight, they would be surrounded and it would be difficult to escape.
"Retreat!" Upon seeing this, the middle-aged man in fine clothes shouted in a low voice, and then led the men in black to flee in another direction.
When Huanmo's men arrived, they saw that Huanmo was injured and surrounded him.
"Sir, are you okay?"
"Quick, go find a doctor!"
Everyone chimed in with their own opinions, their faces full of concern.
Huanmo waved his hand and said, "I'm fine, don't worry about me. Go after those assassins and find out their identities and motives!"
The men, though hesitant, obeyed the order and chased after the man in black as he fled.
Huanmo finally breathed a sigh of relief. He turned his head and looked at Wanru, his eyes filled with exhaustion and gratitude.
"Wanru, thank you. If you hadn't spoken up in time, I might have..." Huanmo said, her voice weak.
Wanru shook her head and said, "Young master, please don't say that. How could I just stand by and watch you be in danger? It's me who has caused you so much trouble."
Huanmo smiled slightly, wanting to say a few words of comfort to Wanru, but before he could speak, his expression suddenly changed, his body swayed, and he almost fell to the ground.
Seeing this, Wanru quickly helped him up and asked anxiously, "Young master, what's wrong?"
Huanmo clutched her chest and said with difficulty, "I...I might have been poisoned. The weapons of those assassins..."
Upon hearing this, Wanru was greatly alarmed. Her gaze fell on the still-bleeding wound on Huanmo's arm, and her heart was filled with worry and fear.
"What should we do? Young master, we must find a doctor right away!" Wanru said anxiously.
Just then, a servant rushed over and said, "Young master, the doctor has been summoned and is just ahead."
Huanmo nodded and, supported by Wanru, walked towards where the doctor was.
However, when they arrived at the doctor's office, the doctor looked hesitant and refused to begin treatment.
"Doctor, what's wrong? Why aren't you doing anything?" Wanru asked anxiously.
The doctor looked at Huanmo, then at Wanru, hesitated for a moment, and said, "Young master, this poison... is a bit tricky. I... I'm not entirely confident I can cure it."
Upon hearing this, Huanmo's heart sank, but he still forced himself to remain calm and said, "Doctor, please speak freely, I will do my best."
The doctor nodded and began to treat Huanmo.
Wanru waited anxiously by the side, her hands clasped tightly together, praying silently that Huanmo would be safe and sound.
Time passed slowly, but the doctor's expression grew increasingly grave.
Finally, the doctor stopped, looked at Huanmo, and shook his head helplessly.
"Young master, this poison is far too potent. I... I am powerless to help," the doctor said, his voice filled with despair.
Upon hearing this, Wanru was struck dumb, her eyes instantly reddened, and tears streamed down her face.
"No, doctor, please think of something! Young Master Huanmo can't be harmed!" Wanru cried.
Huanmo looked at Wanru, reached out and gently wiped away the tears on her face, forcing a smile.
"Wanru, don't be sad. Life and death are predestined. Perhaps this is my fate," Huanmo said, his voice weak but filled with composure.
Wanru shook her head. How could she accept such an outcome? A thought suddenly flashed through her mind: she had traveled from the modern world, so perhaps modern medical knowledge could help?
But what could she do? She only had a rudimentary understanding of the medical knowledge related to detoxification.
Just when Wanru was anxious and at a loss, she suddenly thought of something.
Before she traveled to the research lab, she had participated in a research project on the detoxification effects of ancient herbs. Some of the herbs in the project might be able to alleviate the poisoning that Huanmo had been given.
The problem is, she doesn't know if she can find those herbs in this Warring States period.
