Chapter 29 Traditional Well-Behaved Ladies 2
Chapter 29 Traditional Well-Behaved Ladies 2
Ling Yi remained silent. If it weren't for the fact that Yu Zhengyang's affair with the dancer had become a widely known scandal, his words would have been considered a display of deep affection and loyalty.
But with all that unsavory stuff on the surface, his words are like a greasy piece of raw pork, disgusting.
She quickly shifted her gaze to the young man in the distance, trying to cleanse her soul from the shock of his shamelessness.
Yu Zhengyang thought he had made a heartfelt confession, but received no response. He couldn't help but look angrily at the ungrateful woman, only to see her staring intently at the person he was jealous of, her eyes seeming to want to devour him alive.
Anger flashed across his face: "Ling Yi!"
She was staring at a stranger she had just met; had she completely forgotten all the traditional virtues she had learned about women?
Pooh!
What's so interesting about Wenzhao?
When his biological father was indulging in debauchery, his biological mother was so poor that she almost starved to death. Now that he's eagerly coming to acknowledge his father, has he ever thought about his mother?
Unfilial son!
And Wen Jingshan!
He claims to be busy saving the country, but he's been taking concubines for years, yet not a single child has hatched. Only now does he remember the child born to his first wife in the countryside!
Yu Zhengyang watched as that country bumpkin was praised and lauded by a group of important figures, and his face scrunched up with sarcasm: "A bunch of sycophants, sucking up to the boss!"
"If it weren't for the fact that his father was a veteran in the military with students and friends all over the new government, who would know him?"
"He's just a poor country boy, ill-mannered and good-for-nothing, a waste of so many good resources!"
That poor boy rose to the top overnight just because of his bloodline!
How come Wen Jingshan isn't his biological father?
Ling Yi had had enough of his sharp tongue and incessant chatter: "Mr. Yu is a progressive man who has studied abroad and is very knowledgeable. How can his words be so biased and rude?"
"Who made the assertion that people from the countryside are useless and ill-mannered? What academic paper supports this claim?"
Yu Zhengyang's face suddenly flushed red. He looked incredulously at the woman whose hands were stiffly placed in front of her lower abdomen, and heard her speak in a gentle voice with harsh words: "If not, how is your gossipy and sarcastic manner any different from those old widowers who point fingers at widows on the street?"
"You!" Yu Zhengyang was so angry he almost fell over. This overly traditional woman used to not even dare to raise her head when she saw him, so why was she now arguing for a rich and handsome man?
Where is there even a trace of the traditional concept of putting one's husband above all else?
To talk back so openly is simply unreasonable!
He wanted to argue, but seeing that Wen Jingshan was already coming this way, he could only glare at Ling Yi resentfully and dared not say a word.
Ling Yi also took the opportunity to leave him, and walked obediently behind Ling Zhengtai.
When Ling Zhengtai saw her coming, his smiling face turned serious: "Why didn't you go to your Uncle Yu's place with Zhengyang?"
He found his daughter, who was in her twenties and still unmarried, extremely annoying.
Why is she here instead of trying to please her future husband, Yu Zhengyang?
Ling Yi lowered her head, timidly looking at her embroidered shoes, and said softly, "Young Master Yu asked me to take good care of you first and to drink less alcohol."
Ling Zhengtai's expression softened: "That's a good child, he knows how to care for his elders."
Presumably, this will provide some convenience for the Ling family in future business dealings.
Ling Yi silently tugged at the corners of her lips, listening to this old man spout his wild and unrealistic nonsense.
Wen Zhao followed his father and greeted the guests, whose faces were covered in smiling masks. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of a woman who looked rather unusual.
She was unlike any other woman present; she timidly stayed by her father's side, seemingly out of place in this setting, just like him.
She was probably even more timid, as she was being scolded by her father...
Ok?
He suddenly saw the woman give a mocking smile, while the man who had been incessantly berating her seemed oblivious to her arrogance, uttering words she would never take to heart like a clown.
"Greetings, Mr. Wen. I am Ling Zhengtai from Dafeng Cloth Shop. This is my beloved daughter, Ling Yi." Ling Zhengtai's reprimand came to an abrupt halt when the Wen family father and son arrived, and he reluctantly introduced his daughter, who had embarrassed him.
Wen Jingshan didn't remember these small businessmen who had gotten in by using their visiting cards, and he was too lazy to socialize with them. He just touched his lips to the cup and was about to leave.
But his son seems to have feelings for that woman.
"Hello, Miss Ling, I am Wen Zhao." When Wen Zhao spoke with a slight hometown accent, Wen Jingshan's gaze towards Ling Yi changed.
He claimed to have found his beloved son, but this son was someone he had kidnapped from his hometown. Because he had frightened his elderly and mentally unstable mother, the son refused to call him "father" after arriving.
Wen Jingshan was so worried about his stubbornness that his hair turned white. In order to get his only son to calm down and attend today's banquet, he even gave the old woman two thousand silver dollars and ten large yellow croakers as compensation!
Even so, this kid would ignore visitors completely, and if they occasionally called him "uncle" or responded with a "hello," he would be grateful.
But now, this little girl, who doesn't even seem as outstanding as his new concubine, has actually gotten him to say a word to her.
It's truly novel, truly bizarre!
Ling Yi seemed oblivious to Wen Jingshan's scrutiny, and greeted Wen Zhao obediently, much like a weak and helpless dodder.
Wen Jingshan's heart stirred, and just as he was about to speak, he heard a warm greeting from his in-laws, who was none other than Ling Zhengtai.
Disturbed while alone with Mr. Wen, Ling Zhengtai looked displeased, but he still had to give the Yu family some face:
"Mr. Wen, this is my son-in-law. He is twenty-four years old and has just returned from studying abroad. He is a promising young man..."
Before Ling Zhengtai could finish praising him, Wen Jingshan's face stiffened, and the cup in his hand suddenly turned and bumped into someone next to him.
Ling Zhengtai's face turned red with embarrassment, and Yu Zhengyang, who was about to launch into a long speech, also froze.
What bad luck, he's older and already engaged.
During a break from catching up with an old friend, Wen Jingshan advised his son: "That woman is getting on in years and is already engaged. It's fine to take her as a concubine or keep her outside, but you must never have any thoughts of marriage."
Wen Zhao frowned: "What are you talking about?"
Wen Jingshan patted his shoulder: "I don't blame you for not telling your father the truth. Tomorrow I'll have those two families break off the engagement and keep the girl for now. I'll find you a woman of equal social standing..."
"Enough!" Wen Zhao raised his hand and swatted his hand away, saying coldly, "Don't try to understand me with your own ideas. Do you think everyone is like you, lusting after women and unable to live without them?"
After saying that, he threw down the wine glass in his hand and turned to leave.
Wen Jingshan's face darkened completely, and after a long while, he forced a smile under the gazes of those around him: "This child just came back and isn't close to me yet."
His mother doesn't know how to raise children!
