Chapter 36 Stink
Chapter 36 Stink
"Why did the security guard close the gate?" Miao Yin asked.
Qiu Jing explained, "When we came, we checked the security room's surveillance footage. Actually, the security guard didn't do it on purpose. He was the first to discover the monster biting people outside. Because he didn't know what the mutant was, he immediately closed the gate to prevent them from running in and harming the residents. He also notified everyone not to go out. He just didn't expect that the mutant would also occur in the community, so he did something bad with good intentions."
"Where are the security guards?"
"On the day the mutation occurred, the cleaning lady who worked in the property lobby also turned into a monster, and the security guard was eaten as soon as he came out of the security room passage."
That's right, there is a passageway between the security room and the property management lobby.
Deng Zhize sighed and added, "Not only that, the cleaning lady who turned into a mutant also damaged the control panel in the security room, making it impossible for anyone to open the gate. Our team had to break down the security room door to get in."
Miao Yin understood: "So, when your teammates retreated, they blew up the security room to prevent the mutants from chasing after them, right?"
"What?! The security room was bombed?! How are we supposed to get out?!" the husband exclaimed in panic.
Peng Si looked at Qiu Jing.
Qiu Jing said, "Don't worry, there's an exit at the main gate. I just saw it, and it is indeed a hole, just as Miss Miao Yin said."
"I'm not lying." Miao Yin blinked, both of them knowing that the other was speaking in riddles.
"That's good. When are we leaving? You have guns, so you can escort us, right?" the husband asked quickly.
Peng Si said in a businesslike tone, "I'm sorry, our ammunition reserves are not enough to escort you to the base, and we are all injured and have to wait here for rescue, especially the pregnant woman."
The pregnant woman leaned on her husband and nodded weakly: "We understand."
The old woman rolled her eyes: "After all that talk, it's all for nothing. We need to leave first; we can't be later than the people inside!"
"I'm sorry, but since it's a rescue operation, there's no such thing as leaving early or late. We must follow the unit's movements."
"What if something happens! Last time you were surrounded by monsters because you were dawdling while rescuing people! What if you get surrounded again this time? Aren't we just going to die with you?!" The old woman was so anxious that she even blurted out her local dialect.
When recalling the painful experience of being besieged last time, Deng Zhize clenched his fists.
If the residents hadn't failed to evacuate according to regulations and instead rushed down in a swarm, shouting for them to evacuate immediately and not to worry about the remaining people, thus attracting the attention of the mutants, they wouldn't have been besieged by so many mutants!
In the end, several of his comrades also sacrificed their lives!
“We will do our best to protect the safety of civilians,” Peng Si replied expressionlessly.
He asked Qiu Jing to bring over the cardboard over there, and then sat down by the door to rest and ease the pain in his stomach.
Deng Zhize and Qiu Jing also sat down next to him, remaining on guard at all times.
Seeing that she couldn't get anything out of him, the old woman had no choice but to give up and focus on dressing her grandson.
But before she could have quieted down for even a few minutes, she started again.
"Hey, what's that smell here? It stinks! Is it poisonous? It's even affecting my son and grandson!" the old woman complained.
The chubby little grandson also symbolically pinched his nose and said, "Grandma, it smells awful here."
"Did you hear that? My grandson said it stinks! What kind of things have you put here?!"
The three men's faces immediately turned extremely ugly.
"Why aren't you saying anything? I'm asking you! If you have any trash, throw it out right now."
Deng Zhize could no longer hold back, and said with grief and indignation, "Those are our comrades-in-arms!"
"Comrade-in-arms?" The old woman didn't react at first.
She looked around and noticed something in the corner that was firmly covered by a large cardboard box. Only then did she realize what Deng Zhize meant, and her face turned pale and then red.
The other residents understood what they meant and were shocked.
"Oh my god! You bastards! You actually put a corpse next to us! It's bad luck!" The old woman quickly pulled her grandson and son away in the opposite direction, her face full of fear of getting tainted by bad luck.
"How can you still be living in the same room as a dead person? Throw him out right now!"
“You!” Deng Zhize’s eyes were bloodshot.
Peng Si patted his shoulder to calm him down, then said to the old woman in a deep voice, "So you mean I should throw out our comrades who sacrificed themselves to save you for the mutants to eat?"
The old woman trembled as she looked into the other person's cold gaze.
"But, you can't put it here! Who wants to sleep in the same room as a dead person? It's unclean, what if the child gets sick?"
“We’ve been sleeping for days, are we sick?” Peng Si sat on the ground, but his whole body exuded a sense of oppression.
"In short, there can't be any dead people!" the husband shouted as well.
Peng Si slammed his spear down, his overwhelming presence instantly silencing everyone. His face was as cold as ice as he sternly declared, "As the captain, I will never allow my comrades' bodies to be dishonored! If you can't stand it, go find somewhere else to stay!"
The old woman and her son were both frightened by Peng Si's appearance and realized that he was serious. They were both scared and resentful.
"It's just a corpse, and you're treating it like a treasure? Is this how you soldiers treat the people? You actually want ordinary people to die! Everyone, come and judge! Isn't he oppressing the people? I can sue you!" the old woman shouted.
"I'll sue you! I'll sue you!" The little grandson imitated him and made a face at Peng Si.
The pregnant woman's husband couldn't hold back any longer and yelled, "Hey, what's wrong with you guys? Don't you know what kind of world this is? Those soldiers sacrificed themselves to save you! And what do you do? You can't even leave them a proper burial. Are you even human?!"
"Pah! Who gave you the right to say that! Be careful you don't give birth to a money-losing child!" the old woman cursed.
"Hey, you old hag!" The man stood up abruptly, his eyes wide with anger.
The pregnant woman next to him suddenly lost her support, her face turned extremely pale, she clutched her stomach and groaned in pain.
Upon hearing this, the man immediately became anxious and rushed back to help her up, no longer arguing with the old woman: "Wife, are you alright?"
The pregnant woman's lips were bloodless, but she still weakly shook her head at him.
"I'm sorry, I acted impulsively again. Come on, lean on me, are you feeling better?" The man was extremely distressed and stopped thinking about the strange family next to him.
"Look! This is karma! With your wife being so skinny, what kind of good child can she give birth to! Be careful, she might be born but not raised by her mother!" The old woman smiled gleefully as she saw them suffering, pointing her finger at them and cursing.
Even someone as calm as Qiu Jing couldn't stand seeing someone cursing a pregnant woman. She rebuked, "Auntie, you should be forgiving! We won't stand idly by and watch someone make trouble for a pregnant woman!"
"What? You're going to hit this old woman? Oh my, this is outrageous! Soldiers hitting civilians! Go ahead and do it if you dare, I'm going to sue you!"
Peng Si snorted coldly: "Fine, go ahead and sue us if you dare. I'll be waiting for you. You'll see if you can succeed!"
Seeing that this trick wasn't working, the old woman realized that it was now the apocalypse, and the old methods seemed to be no longer effective; the other party was completely unafraid of her.
The people around her completely ignored her and didn't stand by her side, leaving her to perform a one-woman show, making it impossible for her to exert any pressure.
Her eyes darted around, then she spat angrily on the ground: "Then you just wait, when this old woman finds your boss, I'll give you a good dressing down!"
After saying that, they occupied the spot furthest from the corpse, took the last bit of mineral water, and left the mother and daughter alone in the place.
The little girl nestled in her mother's arms, tears streaming down her face. Her mother held her blankly, seemingly lost in thought.
