Chapter 567 The Cook!
Chapter 567 The Cook!
A week later, in a private room upstairs at Zhong Yuemin's family-owned restaurant.
He held the menu, flipping through it casually, pointing at it with his finger:
"Hmm... this signature braised fish, and this sweet and sour pork ribs, and some braised pork belly, stir-fried seasonal vegetables... a bottle of Moutai to start, more if needed, and then..."
"Eh eh eh!"
Zhang Haiyang, who was sitting opposite him, quickly reached out to stop him.
"Yuemin, you can't do this to me! It's true that I'm treating you today to thank you, but you can't rip me off like this! It's just the two of us, can we finish all this food? That's enough!"
"What's wrong with not being able to finish it?"
Zhong Yuemin spoke with righteous indignation.
"Take it to go! I'll take it back for my wife and daughter, is that not allowed? You're a criminal investigation captain, and you're so stingy! How long have I been going through all this trouble for you, and you're being so stingy about a meal from you?"
"As the deputy captain of the criminal investigation team, I only get a meager fixed salary every month, and it's all earned with my life!"
Zhang Haiyang looked completely wronged.
"We can't compare to a big boss like you. Please have some understanding for ordinary folks like us!"
He snatched the menu and handed it to the waiter:
"Let's serve these for now, and we'll order more if needed."
The waiter took the menu and left, leaving only the two people in the private room, drinking tea and waiting for their food.
Zhang Haiyang took a sip of tea and got down to business:
“Yuemin, when we were interrogating Liu Jianguo, this guy was very insistent that you also took that stuff, and that he secretly added it to your drink when you weren’t looking. He even saw you drink it with his own eyes. He made it sound so convincing. Shouldn’t you… go to the hospital for a checkup?”
"Need not."
Zhong Yuemin waved his hand, looking relaxed.
"If I couldn't see through his little tricks, I would have been a captain of the Special Forces A for nothing back then. Don't worry, I cherish my body more than anyone else. I will never touch that stuff."
Zhang Haiyang nodded. He knew Yuemin well. Although this guy was usually carefree and irresponsible, he always knew right from wrong.
"This time, we've cracked Liu Jianguo's line,"
He then said, a hint of smugness on his face,
“We’ve got a whole supply chain, from upstream to downstream, catching all the big fish and small fry. I guess it won’t be long before I can get rid of that ‘deputy’ title on my head.”
"Then congratulations, Captain Zhang."
Zhong Yuemin raised his teacup, using tea instead of wine.
"At this rate of promotion, if you handle a few more big cases, you'll be promoted to deputy director soon."
"Don't try to fool me, kid."
Zhang Haiyang waved his hand, "Do you think this is like buying cabbage at the market? You can't encounter big cases every day. I really don't want to run into this kind of case. Just this one, how much energy did it take to solve it?"
He paused, then seemed to remember something:
"Should I report this achievement of yours as well? Don't be modest."
"Don't!"
Zhong Yuemin quickly stopped him.
"This is not a good thing. People in this line of work are always risking their lives. Can you be 100% sure there are no fish that have escaped the net? If I take credit for it in a high-profile manner, and those people start targeting me and ruin their plans, how can I live a peaceful life? You keep this credit for yourself."
Zhang Haiyang thought about it and agreed, so he didn't insist anymore.
Soon, all the dishes were served, and the two ate and chatted.
"Yuemin, the food at your restaurant is really good!" Zhang Haiyang said, picking up a piece of pork rib and chewing as he praised it.
"I think it's just as good as those big hotels in Beijing."
He remembered something: "Last time I heard you say that you were going to open one in Wangfujing, Dongcheng District?"
"Ah."
Zhong Yuemin nodded.
"The renovation is basically finished, and we can open for business next month."
He put down his chopsticks and said again:
"Speaking of which, Mancang is coming over in a while. I told him to come to the restaurant and learn the skills from the head chef. In the future, he can either stay here as a chef or go back to his hometown and open his own restaurant, so that he can at least have a proper income."
