Chapter 36 Reconciliation
Chapter 36 Reconciliation
The next day, Wang and Ruan Qingqing swapped jobs. Wang went out to work in the fields with Ruan Wantie and his son, while Ruan Qingqing stayed at home to do laundry, cook, and take care of his younger brothers and sisters.
Seeing the clothes tied around the little brother and sister being much shorter, Ruan Qingqing couldn't help but feel the veins on his forehead throbbing. He called Ruan Lanlan and Ruan Shian to help look after the little brother and sister, and he went to the market again to buy some meat, vegetables, seasonings, and cloth.
She couldn't make clothes, so Wang couldn't count on her. It wasn't that she was worried that she didn't want to do it, but doing such heavy farm work and having to sit under the oil lamp at night to cut cloth and make clothes was really too tiring and unnecessary.
She was not familiar with the others, so she had to invite Old Lady Ruan to her home to teach her how to cut cloth and make clothes.
Ruan Qingqing was quick to learn anything, but she just couldn't get the hang of sewing. She spent a long time trying but still couldn't figure it out. The cloth was torn by her, her fingers were pierced with countless holes, and two sewing needles were broken by her. Old Mrs. Ruan shook her head.
"How can you do this if you can't make clothes? When you get married, your in-laws will look down on you!"
Ruan Lanlan stood aside and watched for a while, then said cautiously, "Sister, how about letting me try?"
"Okay, second sister, you come on! I'm really not good at needlework." Ruan Qingqing did not insist and quickly gave the battlefield to Ruan Lanlan.
The needle and thread changed into Ruan Lanlan's hands. After a while, Ruan Lanlan could sew quickly. Although the stitches were not very smooth, it was her first time, so she was already very talented.
Seeing Mrs. Ruan nodding frequently, she taught more attentively.
Ruan Qingqing also breathed a sigh of relief, as her younger brothers and sisters finally had a place to wear clothes.
Making clothes is too difficult for myself.
However, Mrs. Ruan did not let her go. She cut a small piece of cloth for her and asked her to continue practicing.
In the evening, Ruan Wantie was a little confused when he saw his mother sitting in the yard instructing his two daughters on needlework. "Mom, you're here!"
Old Mrs. Ruan raised her eyelids and hummed softly.
"Mom, what's wrong with you? Who made you angry?" Ruan Wantie was a little confused.
"It's all because of you! Look at the good things you've done. Gambling has ruined our family's financial situation. Now Qingqing is ten years old, and she can't even do a simple needlework. What will you do if you tell others about her in the future?"
Old Mrs. Ruan had a worried look on her face, and the wrinkles on her forehead had deepened.
"This..." Ruan Wantie had never thought about this problem.
He said with a lack of confidence: "No, it's nothing, right?"
"How can it be nothing? In the future, don't tell others not to make clothes for the head of the family and the children. Don't need to sew and mend them?" Old Mrs. Ruan scolded.
"Grandma, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. You see, I just can't sew, so I won't starve." Ruan Qingqing hurriedly explained.
"Yes, yes. At worst, we can just find a son-in-law for Qing who can make clothes." Ruan Wantie said suddenly with an idea.
"You idiot! How can a son-in-law who is willing to marry into the family and can sew clothes be a good son!" Old Mrs. Ruan picked up the half-sewed shoe sole from the sewing basket and was about to hit Ruan Wantie.
"Mother, my dear mother! The children are watching us! Please give me some face!" Ruan Wantie begged for mercy while walking around the yard.
"Grandma, I will work harder in the future. It's still a long way for me to get married!" Ruan Qingqing hurriedly pulled Old Lady Ruan and comforted her.
"How old are you? You still speak so nonsense!" Old Mrs. Ruan stopped and did not forget to scold Ruan Wantie a few words.
"Come on, let's go eat together!" Ruan Qingqing shouted to Ruan Wantie and the others, while helping Old Lady Ruan walk towards the hall.
"Oh, Qingqing, I won't eat here. Your aunt and others at home have prepared the meal!" Old Mrs. Ruan wanted to go back.
"Grandma, I invited you here, so how can you go home without having dinner?" Ruan Qingqing pushed Grandma Ruan to sit at the top seat at the table.
At the dinner table, Ruan Wantie talked about things in the fields as before.
"It will probably take another five or six days to finish burying the fertilizer in the ground. After we finish planting the corn, we can start preparing to build the house!"
"Okay!" Ruan Qingqing and others kept nodding.
Old Lady Ruan stopped chewing when she heard this. "I did hear your father mention it. He asked Old Master Wen to help him find a few good days for laying the foundation. He said there will be a good day in the middle of this month, and the next good days will be in late May and early June."
"Is that so! Then let's speed up the progress, and if we really have no other options, we'll just lay the foundation first. It's a bit late to lay the foundation at the end of May, and I'm afraid the house won't be able to withstand the thunderstorm in June. Since we're planning to build it, we might as well build it earlier." Ruan Wantie raised his head from his bowl and said.
"Yes, that's right." Old Lady Ruan also agreed. She continued, "How about this, why don't you leave the two little ones with me? Qingqing, just prepare the goat milk in the morning. Building a house is a big deal, so you should plant the corn quickly and make preparations early."
Now the two little ones basically drink goat's milk during the day and breast milk at night.
Ruan Wantie nodded, "Okay, we won't be polite with you. Please help us take care of Shikang and Susu for a few days."
Everyone discussed the arrangements for the next few days.
Wang ate with her head down the whole time. She was so tired from a day's work that her back and waist ached. Yet she was still criticized for being too slow and not as efficient as Ruan Qingqing.
She may have had some complaints about Ruan Qingqing before, but after being busy during the day, she no longer had any complaints.
Thinking of Ruan Qingqing, who was only ten years old, but was more skilled in farm work than adults, she felt a little distressed. It was because of their useless parents that they let their children take charge of the family too early.
When Ruan Qingqing and Ruan Wantie went to see off Old Lady Ruan, Wang was walking back and forth in the main room. When she heard the fence door open, she walked over and bumped into Ruan Qingqing.
"Dad is discussing building a house with grandpa." Ruan Qingqing thought Wang was looking for Ruan Wantie, so she explained.
"Mom is not looking for your father. Mom has something to tell you." Wang said hesitantly.
Ruan Qingqing raised her eyebrows and looked at her, waiting for her next words.
"I was wrong before. From now on, I will not give away things from home to others just because of a few nice words from others." Wang said uncomfortably.
Ruan Qingqing exhaled lightly and said softly, "Dad analyzed the reasons why you did this to me last night. Mom, if we want to gain recognition from others, we can't do it by giving gifts, but by becoming stronger ourselves. Just like before when we had nothing at home, who would ever look at us? Now people come to visit us just to see that we bought a homestead, not because we gave them anything!"
Wang lowered her head in embarrassment, "Mother was mistaken before."
Ruan Qingqing's heart softened. She stepped forward, hugged her waist and leaned her head against her affectionately. "Mom, I was wrong before. I shouldn't have spoken to you in that tone. Don't take it to heart."
Wang's tears flowed without warning. "Don't blame me, mother. Don't blame me anymore!"
