Chapter 2117 The Whereabouts of the "Important Person"
Chapter 2117 The Whereabouts of the "Important Person"
Su Zhenhai couldn't finish his sentence, so he sighed heavily, his eyes filled with regret.
Huo Changhe's gaze swept over Su Jingzhuo's empty eyes.
Su Jingzhuo seemed to finally hear what everyone was saying. He slowly raised his hand, wanting to touch Li Lingshi's cheek, but his fingers stopped in mid-air.
He opened his mouth, a dry, barely audible sound coming from his throat: "I haven't... I haven't had a chance to tell her yet..."
He couldn't finish his sentence, his eyes reddening slightly, but no tears fell. The suppressed grief was more heartbreaking than a loud cry.
Su Shengsheng leaned against Su Zhenhai, sobbing, "I was still thinking that I would have a chance to apologize to her for saying such awful things to her before... I always thought there were still many more chances..."
Unexpectedly, Li Ling used such a ruthless method to cut off all opportunities.
The branches of the trees outside the window swayed slightly, gently tapping against the window frame, making a soft, rustling sound, like a low lament.
The Su family didn't even know what Li Lingshi's real name was.
She came with hatred and left in haste. Outsiders were unaware of her existence, but she left an indelible mark on the Su family.
Yan Ruyu sighed inwardly, "Envoy Su, send her back to reunite with her family."
Su Zhenhai snapped out of his daze and slowly nodded.
Before he could speak, Su Jingzhuo seemed to suddenly come back to his senses: "No, Father, I want to marry her. She is my wife and will be buried in the Su family ancestral cemetery."
Su Zhenhai and Su Shengsheng were both stunned.
Yan Ruyu and Huo Changhe exchanged a glance. After all, this was a family matter, and it was inconvenient for her to say anything more. The two of them withdrew, leaving the Su family to discuss it.
Huo Changhe gently put his arm around her shoulder: "She committed suicide. It was her own choice, Yu'er. This has nothing to do with you."
Yan Ruyu was silent for a moment, then said, "I understand."
Huo Changhe and she stood in the garden, looking at the small pavilion in the lake. He remembered that he first met Li Lingshi here.
After a long while, Yan Ruyu withdrew her gaze: "Has everything been arranged?"
No matter how long something goes on, it has to come to an end.
Huo Changhe nodded: "It's all arranged, tonight."
As the setting sun slowly sank behind the eaves in the west, it bathed the green tiles of the governor's mansion in a warm orange hue.
The wind carried a slight heat, but it couldn't dispel the heavy oppression in the mansion. The soldiers who used to stand guard under the eaves now stood up straight, their hands on the swords at their waists, and the sound of their boots grinding against the blue bricks echoed throughout the courtyard.
Chunni sat on the couch by the window, opened half of the window, and looked out. She saw the cold tips of spears moving orderly along the corridor. The footsteps of the soldiers outside were very low, and only a few indistinct commands could be vaguely heard.
Chunni unconsciously picked at the wood grain on the windowsill with her fingertips. Just as she was about to take a closer look, the curtain was gently lifted, bringing in a gust of wind.
"Why are you opening the window to let in the wind?" Yan Ruyu's voice carried a hint of gentle reproach. She quickly walked over, reached out and closed most of the window, leaving only a small crack for ventilation.
Chunni's gaze fell on her slightly hurried footsteps: "What's going on outside?"
Yan Ruyu did not answer, but instructed, "Something has happened, and the city envoy Su has come personally to mobilize manpower."
Her tone was calm, but a hint of seriousness flashed in her eyes: "Stay in this courtyard tonight, and whatever you do, don't go out."
"Why?" Chunni pressed. "Is something urgent? If you're short-handed, I can help."
Yan Ruyu gently pressed her shoulder: "The matter is urgent, but it's not necessary for you to go with me."
"I came to tell you that the situation is special tonight. All the people in the manor have been sent out, and no one can spare the time to protect you. Staying here quietly and being careful is the biggest help you can give."
Chunni looked into her eyes: "I'm not doing this for Governor Ding."
Chunni bit her lower lip, her tone firm: "I want to repay you. Although I am a woman, I am not powerless."
Yan Ruyu smiled faintly: "I know your feelings. But tonight is different. It's very chaotic outside. Swords and spears have no eyes. I can't let you take that risk."
Her words were gentle, yet carried an undeniable firmness.
Chunni wanted to say something more, but Yan Ruyu had already turned and walked towards the door, her steps more hurried than when she came.
Then, her voice could be heard outside as she gave instructions to the soldiers, vaguely telling the guards to keep a close eye on the situation.
Chunni sat on the couch, feeling as if a stone was pressing on her heart. The more she thought about it, the more uneasy she became, her fingers clenching tightly until the curtain was gently pushed open again and a maid came in carrying a tray.
Chunni quickly stopped her: "What exactly happened outside? Tell me."
The maid paused, "It's nothing, Miss, don't worry about it. It's just a routine transfer within the manor."
"Would General Su come personally for the transfer? Would Sister Yan be in such a hurry?" Chunni pressed, her tone urgent. "Tell me the truth, has something serious happened? I won't go out and cause trouble, I'm just uneasy and want to know the reason."
The maid bit her lip, looked around, and then took a few steps closer. She lowered her voice and said, almost in a whisper, "Miss, I heard it from the older brothers guarding the courtyard... It seems they've found the whereabouts of the Liu family and some of their hidden things."
"What is it?" Chunni's eyes widened suddenly, her breath hitched, and her fingers tightened around the blanket. "What did they hide?"
The maid frowned and thought for a moment, then shook her head: "I don't know exactly what it is. I heard from the soldiers that it seems to be some kind of...treasure."
"Treasure?" Chunni murmured, repeating the same question.
The maid nodded, a gleam of pleasure in her eyes, her tone cheerful: "The Liu family has been tyrannical in Rongzhou all these years, seizing fertile land, monopolizing salt and iron, and squeezing so much blood and sweat from the people. Isn't that a treasure trove?"
“These things should be retrieved; it would be a way to vent the anger of the people of Rongzhou.”
The maid changed the subject: "But these are all important matters, they have nothing to do with us. Miss, you should just focus on recovering and don't worry about these things."
She paused, then asked, "What would you like to eat tonight? There's chicken soup in the kitchen, and some stir-fried vegetables that you like. I'll go get them for you."
Chunni was in a state of confusion and had no appetite.
She waved her hand: "Whatever, just bring whatever you think is best."
The maid responded, gave a few more instructions, and quietly withdrew, closing the door behind her.
The room fell silent again, with only the occasional chirping of insects coming from outside the window.
Chunni leaned against the headboard, her mind replaying the maid's words, Su Zhenhai's troop deployment, Yan Ruyu's instructions... all of these combined to make her increasingly uneasy.
Tonight, Rongzhou City will likely not be peaceful.
As darkness fell, the sun sank completely, disappearing even the last rays of light into the horizon.
Night fell like a thick black cloth, enveloping the entire governor's mansion.
At this hour on ordinary days, lanterns would be swaying in the mansion, and the whispers of maids and servants could be heard occasionally. But tonight, it was unusually quiet.
Chunni walked to the window, lifted a corner of the curtain, and looked outside.
